Readme for the abctab2ps source distribution ============================================ abctab2ps --------- abctab2ps is a music and tablature typestting program which translates an input file in the abc language into postscript. It is based on Michael Methfessel's program abc2ps. While abc2ps can only typeset music, abctab2ps is an extension by Christoph Dalitz that can also handle lute tablature. Requirements ------------ In order to use abctab2ps you need the following additional software: - a text editor for creating files in the abc language (alternatively you can use flabc) - a postscript interpreter (ghostscript or a postscript printer) for viewing and printing the output files In order to compile abctab2ps from the sources, you need an ANSI C++ compiler with STL support. If you do not have a C++ compiler or do not know how to use it, you should get one of the binary packages from the abctab2ps home page. If you manage to compile abctab2ps in an environment not yet mentioned in the list above, please report it to the author and attach an appropriate makefile. Installation ------------ Notice for Unix users: If you already have a version of abctab2ps prior 1.2.0 and have the environment variable ABCTABFONTS set to the font directory of your old installation, you must first uninstall your old version and unset ABCTABFONTS. This is necessary because the default font location has changed with version 1.2.0. To install abctab2ps from the source code package, do the following: - unpack the TGZ-archive eg. with "tar xzf" - Change to the subdirectory "src" - Rename the makefile for your platform/compiler into "Makefile", edit it and adjust the compiler flags and installation directories to your system. - To compile the source code: o on Linux or OSX type "make" o for a universal binary on Intel Macs type "make universal" o on Windows type "make win32" - For a test run on the file "sample.abc", you can type "make test" - To install abctab2ps to the directories specified in the Makefile, type "make install" - To remove all files generated during compilation, type "make clean" - If you want to uninstall abctab2ps, type "make uninstall" On Linux, if you have the ESP Package Manager (freely available from http://www.easysw.com/epm/), you can alternatively create an RPM (DEB) package with "make rpm" ("make deb") and then install the created package with "rpm -i ..." ("dpkg -i ..."). If "make rpm" fails, see the FAQ for a common pitfall. If you install the abctab2ps fonts in some other directory than /usr/share/abctab2ps or /usr/local/share/abctab2ps, you must set the environment variable ABCTABFONTS to the full path of the directory containing the tablature font files. Under Unix, you can set ABCTABFONTS in /etc/profile, $HOME/.kshrc, $HOME/.bashrc or your particular shell's profile. Under Windows NT you can set it in the system settings menu, under Windows 9x you must set it in autoexec.bat and reboot (see the FAQ for more details). Usage and Documentation ----------------------- In order to create a music/tablature score you must perform the following steps: 1) start an editor, enter the music in abc language and save it under a filename with the extension ".abc", eg. "bla.abc" 2) switch to the command line and call abctab2ps on that file, eg. "abctab2ps bla.abc". This will create the score as postscript graphics in the file "Out.ps". You will find the necessary documentation for both steps in the subdirectory "doc": 1) The User's Guide in the subdirectory "doc/userguide" describes the abc language and is essential for step 1. There is both a postscript version (for print out) and a HTML version (for online reference). 2) The manual page in the subdirectory "doc/manpages" describes the invocation of abctab2ps and all command line parameters. It is essential for step 2. There is both a html version and a nroff version (for online reference with "man"). If you run Unix and the installation with "make install" was successful, you should be able to read the man page with "man abctab2ps". 3) Some illustrative examples are in the subdirectory "doc/examples". The postscript versions of the documentation are in ISO A4 format.
