B:Irish Music, No. 8, page 2 (Mulvihill's note reads
B:'as played by Denis Murphy').
N:The first recording from 1955 is this two part
N:setting played by Gorman and Willie Clancy. In
N:1968, Gorman recorded it solo with four new parts
N:tacked on, mostly minor improvisations around the
N:basic theme.
N:Gorman may have got the tune from Margaret Barry,
N:as it can be traced to a Scottish tune called (in
N:expurgated form) 'Jenny's Delight', a bawdy
N:broadside ballad dating from circa 1673, mentioned
N:in Claude M Simpson, 1966 (ed.), No. 243, in 'The
N:British Broadside Ballad and its Music', New
N:Brunswick. The tune is also found in the Browne
N:Collection, MS 11, 1800-1810, from Troutbeck,
N:Westmorland (Lake District).
N:O'Neill has two tunes in DMI, 'Bill Clancy's
N:Delight' and 'Pretty Peggy', both of which make use
N:of variants of first part of the present tune,
N:suggesting that 'Jenny's Delight' enjoyed a wide
N:currency.
