N:I was contacted by Gerry Strong (April '08) asking if I knew anything about
N: this; which led me to find it in the Brimi recording and add the title and
N: discography. He has sent me an English translation of the Brimi sleeve-notes
N: - "Learned from Ola Moløkken (He was a fiddle player from Lom, the same
N: place as Hans W; Brimi, and one of Brimi's teachers. He lived from
N: 1871 - 1957). Hans (W.Brimi) played/used this waltz often and it suits
N: his way/style of playing very well."
N: He then asked the Norsk Folkemusikksamling at the University
N: of Oslo if they knew anything about it, and kindly passed their comments
N: back here for inclusion. They say :-
N: "Rønnaug Ripstrond is an old traditional fiddle tune, still played today
N: by fiddlers and groups focusing on tradition from north-western parts of
N: Gudbrandsdalen (the communities Skjåk, Lom and Vågå, in the
N: central/northern part of southern Norway). I think this tune is quite
N: local to this area - we have not registrated it anywhere else.
N: The name ("typical" name for Skjåk, i think) points to a lady, living in
N: the second part of the 19th. century. She probably had this tune as her
N: favourite for waltz-dancing, and often asked the fiddlers to play it -
N: an ordinary way for fiddle tunes to be "baptized".
N: - Olav Saeta".
N: I fear this may have upset the thing about it being a quite-local tune, though.
