W:As it fell out upon one day
W:Rich Divus made a feast
W:And he invited all his friends
W:And gentry of the best
W:
W:Then Lazarus laid him down and down
W:And down at Dives' door
W:"Some meat, some drink, brother Dives
W:Bestow upon the poor."
W:
W:"Thou are none of mine, brother Lazarus,
W:That lies begging at my door
W:No meat nor drink I'll give to thee,
W:Nor none I'll bestow on the poor."
W:
W:Then Lazarus laid him down and down
W:And down at Dives' wall
W:"Some meat, some drink, brother Dives
W:Or with hunger starve I shall."
W:
W:"Thou are none of mine, brother Lazarus,
W:That lies begging at my wall
W:No meat nor drink I'll give to thee,
W:But with hunger starve you shall."
W:
W:Then Lazarus laid him down and down
W:And down at Dives' gate
W:"Some meat, some drink, brother Dives
W:For Jesus Christ his sake."
W:
W:"Thou are none of mine, brother Lazarus,
W:That lies begging at my gate
W:No meat nor drink I'll give to thee,
W:For Jesus Christ his sake."
W:
W:Then Dives sent out his merry men
W:To whip poot Lazarus away,
W:But they had no power to strike one stroke,
W:And threw their whips away.
W:
W:Then Dives sent his hungry dogs
W:To worry poor Lazarus away,
W:But the had no power to bite one bite
W:So they licked his sores away.
W:
W:As it fell out upon one day
W:Poor Lazarus he sickened and died.
W:There came two angels out of heaven,
W:His soul there to guide.
W:
W:"Rise up, rise up, brother Lazarus,
W:And come along with me;
W:For there's a place in heaven provided,
W:To sit upon an angel's knee."
W:
W:As it fell out upon one day
W:That Dives sickened and died.
W:There came two serpents out of hell,
W:His soul there to guide.
W:
W:"Rise up, rise up, brother Dives,
W:And come along with me;
W:For there's a place in hell provided,
W:To sit upon a serpent's knee."
W:
W:Then Dives lifted up his eyes
W:And saw poor Lazarus blest:
W:"A drop of water, brother Lazarus,
W:For to quench my flaming thirst."
W:
W:"If I had as many years to live
W:As there is blades of grass
W:I would make it in my will secure
W:That the devil should have no power.
W:
W:Oh, hell is dark, oh, hell is deep;
W:Oh hell is full of mice,
W:It is a pity that any poor sinful soul
W:Should depart from our saviour, Christ."
W:
W:And now my carol's ended,
W:No longer can I stay.
W:God bless you all, both great and small,
W:And God send you a happy New Year"
