N:As the Chief mentions in his fascinating sketch of Edward Cronin
in "Irish Minstrels and Musicians" (p.392), there was "but one rival"
(not specified but probably Sergeant James O'Neill) for Cronin's
fiddling abilities in the Chicago traditional music scene. The
highly-ornamented settings of Cronin's contributions to the various
collections would seem to bear this out. I have added a simplified
version of this lovely Cronin tune for those of you not enamored of
great gobs of triplets (show of hands, please?) I think Mr. Cronin
flourished a few years before recording was a possibility, but I
have to think he might have sounded like Coleman.
